The situation is becoming critical. The World Health Organization describes the outbreak as posing a "significant public health threat." It began on January 21, and as of Monday, there have been 419 cases, including 53 deaths.
According to the WHO Africa office, the first outbreak began in the town of Boloko after three children ate a dead bat. They died 48 hours after developing symptoms. What were they? The same as those of hemorrhagic fever, including high temperature, bleeding from various parts of the body, headaches, joint pain.
This is what is really disturbing
– Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo, told the Associated Press, referring to how quickly the patients died.
Mysterious disease is killing people. It starts with a high temperatureEbola is one of the most well-known causes of hemorrhagic fever. But is this one Ebola? Officials sent samples from 13 cases for testing. All of the samples were negative for Ebola and other hemorrhagic diseases such as Marburg, but some were positive for malaria.
The disease's fatality rate is 12.3 percent, according to the WHO's Africa office, about 10 times higher than when Covid began spreading.
The remote location of the disease hotspots coupled with the poor healthcare infrastructure in the country increase the risk of further spread, requiring immediate high-level intervention to contain the epidemic.
– WHO experts warn.
The outbreaks come just months after a mysterious “Disease X” killed 143 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Officials later said it was likely a severe form of respiratory malaria.
